Stoke-on-Trent Special Constables Index, 1916-1926

Background

The Borough of Stoke-on-Trent Police force was established in 1910, coinciding with the federation of the city, when the Potteries’ division ceased to be part of the county force. From 1925, its name was changed to Stoke-on-Trent City Police, and it retained this name until it again merged with the county force in 1968.

About this index

This index covers appointments of special constables between 1916 and 1926. Special constables were volunteer police officers who retained their regular jobs, and their day to day occupations appear on each entry.

Other records of interest

There are several other personnel registers which detail appointments to the regular city police force. There are also records of the individual stations, for example, duties registers, and a separate collection of records of the county police force (see separate index of the Staffordshire Police Force registers).

See also our separate indexes to the main county police force and the main police force in Stoke-on-Trent.

If you are interested in further records of Stoke-on-Trent City Police, please contact Stoke-on-Trent City Archives for further information. Please note that access to records relating to individuals who would be less than 100 years old will be restricted under data protection legislation.
